Επιστολή προς τους γονείς των μαθητών της Γ΄ τάξης

                                                                                                                                Nicosia, 13th of February

Dear Parents/Guardians of Year 3 students,
We would like to inform you, in more detail, of the options available for Greek which have been introduced after the Curriculum Review.  A table summarising these changes is located at the end of this letter.
Greek Native Speakers
Current Year 3 students have the choice to opt for Classical or Modern Greek in Years 4 and 5.
Those who opt for Modern Greek will follow a two year course (Years 4 and 5), in order to complete the IGCSE Modern Greek and the GCE A level Modern Greek exam. In Year 4, students will sit the IGCSE and the AS Modern Greek Exam. Four periods per 10 day timetable have been allocated, in order to prepare the students for these exams. In addition, the teaching of A2 Modern Greek will start in Year 4 with 5 periods per 10 day timetable, and continue in Year 5 when the students will sit the A2 Modern Greek Exam completing their A level in Modern Greek.
Students who opt for Classical Greek will also complete the IGCSE and AS Modern Greek in Year 4, having 4 periods per 10 day timetable allocated for their preparation. The other 5 periods in Year 4 are allocated for the teaching of GCSE Classical Greek which will continue in Year 5 where all teaching periods are allocated for the GCSE Classical Greek Exam.   The Greek department has suggested that the School offers Modern Greek A2 afternoon lessons to the students who opt for Classical Greek, at a minimum cost, in order to prepare them for the A2 Modern Greek exam. This will enable students to complete both the GCSE Classical Greek Exam and the A Level Modern Greek. The GCSE Classical Greek Exam is an essential requirement for those who wish to opt for A Level Classical Greek in Y6 and Y7 as one out of their three options.
The teaching of Modern Greek will continue up to Year 6. In Year 6 there are 6 periods allocated per 10 day timetable in order to prepare the students for the exam of “Πιστοποιητικό Πολύ Καλής Γνώσης της Ελληνικής Γλώσσας,” which is offered by the Ministry of Education and Culture and it is compulsory for Greek-speaking students at our school. This certificate has great validity for students who graduate from an English speaking school in Cyprus.

Classical Greek and Classical Civilization will be offered as an A Level option in Year 6 along with the other subjects. Students who opt for one of these subjects will still be taught the 6 periods of Greek in Year 6 that are allocated for the teaching of “Πιστοποιητικό Πολύ Καλής Γνώσης της Ελληνικής Γλώσσας”.
The Greek Department wishes to assure all parents and students that maintaining a high standard of Greek is our primary target. The highly demanding Greek curriculum in Years 1-3 aims to maintain this standard and the excellent IGCSE and A Level results.
Non-Native Speakers
Non-Native speakers follow a different program in Greek and their syllabus is based on their level, which is systematically evaluated through assessment. The evaluation of each student’s individual needs, and differentiation in class, are of high priority in teaching Greek as second or as a foreign language. The aim is for the Non-Native Speakers to be able to sit the GCSE Modern Greek Exam and the A Level Modern Greek Exam (AS and A2 or only the AS depending on their level). The teaching of Greek as a second or as a foreign language continues up to Year 6.
The School will regularly review each student’s subsequent progress and will decide whether it is appropriate for each student to join the mainstream class.
We remain at your disposal for any further information or to discuss the future decisions of your child. Please do not hesitate to contact the Head of the Greek Department or any other member of the department.

Yours sincerely,
Christina Ioakimidou
